Newsvine Groups are a great way to bring together people around common interests. Whether it be "University of Washington English Department", "Democrats For George Bush", or "Art Lovers", groups provide a way for members to collect and discuss articles amongst themselves, rather than in Newsvine's general population.
Here's how it works:
1. Click on "Your Groups" in the black navigation bar near the top of the screen. From here you can either create your own group or join an existing one (this step is already done for this group... it's all set up).
2. The person who sets up the group can assign administrator powers to anyone they choose. Administrators can customize the layout of the group page and accept new members.
3. The final step is to start publishing articles to the group. Publishing articles to this group is as easy as checking one checkbox. When a member of this group writes an article or seeds a link, it normally appears both on their Newsvine column and around the site in general. On the publish screen, however, there is a checkbox that says "Publish to:". Simply check the checkbox alongside the name of this group and the article or link will automatically appear on the group's front page.
Groups provide all sorts of other functionality as well. For instance, use the "Group Talk" module on the group's front page to hold impromptu conversations between group members. Or click the new "Start Group Discussion" tab at the bottoms of all articles on Newsvine to publish existing Newsvine content into this column and start a group discussion about it.
So it's time to get started. Invite your friends into this group and post your questions or comments below.
